Egg Released

From the beach in Oregon. Was originally to be a natural Black & White, but the hint of color looked good to me....

Shot with an extreme wide angle, and very low to the ground.

Again, I find myself drawn to contrasts- tone, texture, shape.

Stormy Wasatch Series Released

Stormy Wasatch Series Released

Landscape photographer Dave Koch has just released a new series of three images in the "Stormy Wasatch" series. The three images were made following a rather fierce storm in the Wasatch mountains, and the series follows the storm as it clears the mountains into a clean and breathtaking series of images.

The first image- Stormy Wasatch (Rays)- shows the sun peaking out over the craggy peaks and inclines of the mountains. Pine trees look on in mute silence as the clouds break away.

Stormy Wasatch (Fog) shows the point of a mountain as it peaks through the clouds and into the layers of sun. The violent past of the Wasatch is visible in the rocks jutting out at obtuse angles.

Stormy Wasatch (Waterfall)- the final image in the series- shows the effects of the recent storm. A normally sedate stream is rushing with water down a steep slope forming the Secret Falls. Again, the rock of the Wasatch is the foundation of the image, with cracks...

Dave Koch Photography Wins Best Of State

Just after returning from the Oregon Coast shoots last week, I was notified that the winners of Best of State were announced, and my work won for Nature Photography. Just being nominated is incredible, but to win has my head spinning. The Best of State Awards were created to recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses in Utah. They judge the body of work of an artist, not just a single image. It also looks at one's contributions to the state of Utah, and being an ongoing contributor to making Utah a better place. To me, this is so much more than winning for taking one good picture; this is about a continued high standard for quality and creativity, and for giving back to the community.

My goal with my photography has always been to share the beauty all around us. More than once, I have been out on a shoot thinking, "I get up at 3 AM so you don't have to." And to a certain extent that is true. I...

Photo Of The Day- Goblin Milky Way

Goblin Milky Way (or Racing the Dawn)

My first trip to Goblin Valley was so much fun, and such a success for me, that my wife insisted I return the following weekend... with her. I'm good with that. There were some images I wanted to revisit, and some places I never got to I wanted to explore. So for the second week in a row, I'm up at two AM and headed down the driveway for points south.

My first disappointment when we arrived- the ground frost was not present. That frost added so much to the previous week's shoot, and I was so hoping for that extra. We got to the parking lot, and I was still trying to decide where to start the shoot. I was not going back to the Eyes of the Goblin- I've already done that. During the drive, I decided to try some star shots in the valley if we got there early enough.

I roll out of the car and look up. And there, hanging across the eastern sky, was the Milky Way, just blazing away. Well, that pretty much made up my mind about...

Photo Of The Day - TURRET ARCH

Arches National Park is a pretty popular park. The park is very interactive, too; it begs you to walk, to touch and to explore. Arches, after all, are made to be climbed on. You can’t climb over the Arches, of course; the rangers frown on that. But tourist can- and do- climb all over beneath and around them. All the time. Millions of them. And they do it just to ruin my pictures.

This is a pretty popular angle on the North Window Arch. Often, this is shot at sunrise, with gold light spilling through North Window and hitting the Turret Arch in the distance. I used to think this was shot the opposite way, but discovered that error the last trip to Arched last August. (I had also thought it was done at sunset- my mistake!)

This was late afternoon. And the place was crawling with tourists. The light was nice, turning gold in the distance. The near side of North Window was lit by red light reelected from the rock wall I am perched on, resulting in the deep red glow...

Photo Of The Day - Sun Dog

Photo Of The Day - Sun Dog

Sun Dog (or how to get sunbursts in your pictures)

Early morning in Southern Utah. The sun rises over Goblin Valley State Park. The blue of the shadows in the valley combine with the red of the rocks or make a strange purple tint in the shadows. The sun pours gold onto the landscape. The sphinx-dog looks to the west. Every rock shape looks like something.

There is not a whole lot to add to this shoot. Once the sun started coming up, I was shooting like a machine gun. Every way you turn in Goblin Valley is a great shot. Early in the morning was so much more spectaular, as you will see in upcoming shots. As an advance peak- smoke rising from the HooDos as the dew steams off, and frsot gems along the ground. You won't see either in the heat of the day.

But the Hoodoos are the real draw here. There is so much avriety. When you shoot to the west, you wonder what you are missing to the East or the South! You really have to edit in your eye, becayuse you can't...

Photo Of The Day - Quickie At The Arches

Photo Of The Day - Quickie At The Arches

This one was literally a quickie. With the sun blazing and a view for miles, I did not need a tripod. I pulled off on a turn out with only room for a couple cars, and just started walking until I saw the composition I wanted.

This was one of my first times out with my new D810. I had it paired with a Tamron 24-70, which is an awesome little lens. Not very little or light though!

So my idea here was to get the Tower of Babel and The Organ to truly tower, and to isolate them from the other objects behind them. I did NOT want to see the Courthouse peeking out there. I wanted an angle on the giant fin of rock so as to best see the contrast of sun and shadow. I like angles a lot better than straight on. So I found this spot and made a couple images.

I sort of like the little cloud wisps peeking out from behind the Tower of Babel, like a little bit of smoke. This is a pretty straight ahead shot. It was done on the D810, with the 24-70 Tarmon, as I said. I used...

Photo Of The Day - Capitol Reef Barn

Driving around Capitol Reef, one of the most striking buildings is the old barn. It's super photogenic, and the vista in front of the barn is incredible. The problem- every one has shot that picture. I really do not like doing the same shot as everyone else. But I shot it anyway, because it is very pretty.

As I was walking around the barn, I kept looking for something new. The barn doors were open and the horses were out. I walked into the barn and knew I had found my own image. The door frame perfectly surrounded the shot I wanted. I still get the view, and I still get the rustic nature of the barn. But I could tell that story in my own way.

The image was shot in the Winter of 2017. It was shot with a Nikon D810 and an Tamron 15-30 lens. The image was shot at ISO64 with a shutter speed of 1/30sec at ƒ/18. This was shot hand-held because of mobility issues.

The ISO was chosen first to allow the finest noise possible. It being outdoor, I knew I had a LOT of...

Photo Of The Day - The Castle At Capitol Reef

The Dave Koch Photography Photo of the Day is "The Castle at Capitol Reef" from Capitol Reef National Park in southern Utah. Standing guard above the Visitor Center at Capitol Reef, the Castle catches the evening sun.

The image was shot by Dave Koch in the Winter of 2017. It was shot with a Nikon D810 and an Tamron 15-30 lens. The image was shot at ISO32 with a shutter speed of 1/20sec at ƒ/22. A tripod was used while making the image.

The ISO was chosen first to allow the finest noise possible. Then an f-stop of 22 was chosen to insure a maximum depth of field. This resulted in the rather short shutter speed of 1/20th, which was fine for a tripod-stabilized shot.

This was the final image in a series of three set-ups and approximately 25 images. The initial image was from just off the road on the east approach to the visitors center. After shooting that, a curve in the river was noticed, and it was thought that created more interest in the composition. A...

Dave Koch Places First And Second For Landscape Photography At BYU

Dave Koch Places First And Second For Landscape Photography At BYU

This year, Dave Koch entered two pieces in the BYU Monte Bean Nature Photography Competition and Exhibition. One, Gnarled Tree on the Precipice, I entered in Landscapes. The second, Ice Floe, I put into the Water category…. because I thought Ice was like water, and the ice was the main subject of the piece (to me). One of the nice things about this competition is the quick turn around, from entry to results. I took the images down last Saturday, and by Thursday, the judging is done. Typically, someone at the Bean will call you if you have placed. So, needless to say, I was on pins and needles all day.

The unfortunate thing was I had an out of town shoot all morning Thursday. In Heber. No, in the hills ABOVE Heber. So I was completely out of cell phone coverage all morning. Which is, I guess, good, because I could then focus on my work.

So as I finished my shoot, the couple asked for some aerials of their property. I pulled out my drone, and set to work configuring...
